Frequently Asked Questions - Link Accounting & Business Solutions

Have a question about our services or accounting and finance in general? We’ve compiled some of the most frequently asked questions we get from individuals and business clients. Browse the FAQs below - and if you don’t see the answer you need, feel free to reach out to us directly. We’re always happy to help!

What services does Link Accounting & Business Solutions provide?

We are a full-service accounting and financial advisory firm. Our services include individual tax return preparation, tax planning, business accounting and bookkeeping, BAS and GST compliance, business structuring advice, Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF) setup and accounting, financial planning and wealth management advice, and more. Essentially, we cater to both individuals and small-to-medium businesses for all their accounting, tax, and financial advisory needs. Think of us as a one-stop shop for financial expertise - whether you need help with personal tax deductions or strategic advice for growing your business, we have specialists who can assist.

Our first step with any new client is a complete review of your current operations and business structure. We want to understand how you’re set up, what’s working, and what needs improvement. From this review, we’ll provide you with actionable recommendations – whether it’s a better accounting system, a tax strategy you haven’t utilized, or an asset protection measure to put in place. Together, we develop a road map tailored to your business.

Do you work with both individuals and businesses?

Yes, absolutely. We have a diverse client base. On the individual side, we help salary earners, investors, property owners, retirees - anyone who needs assistance with taxes or financial planning. For businesses, we specialise in SMEs (small and medium enterprises), including sole traders, partnerships, companies, and family trusts. Many of our business clients are owner-operated (family businesses), and we understand the unique challenges they face. No client is too small - we work with start-ups and side hustles - and we have the expertise to support larger established businesses as well. Our team structure has dedicated accountants for individual matters and others focused on business needs, so you get expertise relevant to your situation.

Next, we’ll get you set up on our systems with minimal disruption. If you require a cloud accounting platform (like Xero), we handle the setup and training. We also liaise with your previous accountant or bookkeeper (if applicable) to transfer information seamlessly. Our team will ensure all ATO registrations, accounting files, and records are in order. You’ll meet the key team members who will be looking after you, so you know exactly who to contact for what.

What is a Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF), and can you help me set one up?

A Self-Managed Super Fund is a private superannuation fund that you manage yourself (as opposed to having your retirement savings in a retail or industry super fund). An SMSF can have up to four members (typically family members) and gives you greater control over how your super is invested - for example, SMSFs can invest in residential or commercial property, specific shares, etc., which large funds might not allow you to choose individually. Yes, we can definitely help with SMSFs. We offer end-to-end SMSF services, from assessing if an SMSF is right for you, to setting up the fund (establishing the trust, arranging a corporate trustee if needed, registering with the ATO), and ongoing compliance like annual financial statements, tax returns, and audits. We also provide SMSF investment strategy advice and ensure you understand your responsibilities as a trustee. SMSFs are not for everyone due to the responsibilities involved, but if it suits your situation, we’ll make sure it’s managed smoothly and in compliance with all regulations. (For more details, see our SMSF services page or contact us for personalized advice.)

Throughout the year, count on us as an extension of your team. We’ll schedule regular check-ins – for some clients that’s quarterly strategy meetings (included in many packages), for others it might be a quick monthly call. Need advice out of the blue? Just ring or email us – we encourage questions and are happy to be your sounding board on financial decisions. And when those inevitable urgent issues pop up (say, a looming BAS deadline or a finance application needing statements), we prioritize getting you sorted fast.

How do your fees work for accounting and advisory services?

We believe in transparent and fair pricing. For tax return preparation and accounting services, we often operate on fixed fees or hourly rates depending on the task. We’ll give you a quote or estimate upfront once we understand what you need. For example, a straightforward individual tax return may be a set fee, whereas ongoing bookkeeping for a business might be billed monthly. All accounting fees we charge are typically tax-deductible in Australia, which is a nice bonus for our clients (you can claim the cost of managing your tax affairs as a deduction). For financial planning/advisory, as mentioned above, we use a fee-for-service model. We’ll outline the cost of developing a financial plan or providing investment advice before you commit. There are no hidden commissions. If you engage us for ongoing portfolio management or reviews, we will discuss and agree on those fees in advance as well (could be a flat annual fee or per-review fee, tailored to the complexity of your situation). We aim to be very clear so you’re never caught off guard. For specific details, you can refer to our Financial Advisor Fees page which explains our approach, or simply ask us for a fee schedule relevant to your needs.

Come end of financial year, we really roll up our sleeves. We’ll do a thorough tax planning session before June 30 to implement any last-minute strategies. After year-end, we prepare your financial statements and tax returns promptly. Then we sit down with you for an annual review meeting – to not only go over the past year’s results, but also plan for the year ahead. We’ll discuss tax-saving outcomes, business performance, and set goals for the new year. This annual cycle ensures continuous improvement and no surprises at tax time.

As a Link Accounting client, you also gain access to our network and resources. We have affiliates in financial planning, insurance, and lending (finance brokers) – so if you need help beyond accounting, we can refer trusted professionals. Check out our blog for free tips and our client resources library for handy guides on topics like record-keeping or cash flow. We want to empower you with knowledge, not keep you in the dark.

Planning to eventually sell or hand over your business? It’s never too early to start succession planning. Link Accounting guides you through preparing your business for sale or transition – from valuing your business and tidying financial records to advising on tax-effective exit strategies (like small business CGT concessions). Our goal is to help you maximize the value you’ve built when the time comes to exit or retire.

We’re not just accountants; we’re partners in your success. Many of our small business clients benefit from regular coaching-style meetings. In these sessions, we review your financial performance, discuss challenges, and keep you accountable to your business goals. It’s like having a knowledgeable business mentor who can interpret the numbers and guide you on strategy. Our clients love that we explain financial concepts in plain language and help them become more confident business owners.

What makes Link Accounting different from other accounting firms? Why should I choose you?

We’re glad you asked! A few key things set Link Accounting & Business Solutions apart:

Holistic Services

We bridge the gap between accounting and financial planning. You get access to tax experts and financial advisors under one roof. This means more coordinated advice - for instance, when we create a financial plan, we consider tax implications, and when we do your tax, we consider your broader financial goals.

With over two decades in the industry, our team brings extensive experience across industries and business life stages. We’ve coached start-ups, growing enterprises, and established companies, so we can tailor our expertise to your situation. Our accountants are Chartered Accountants and registered tax agents, ensuring you receive the highest standard of advice and compliance.

Experience and Local Knowledge

We’ve been serving Perth and Canning Vale communities for over 18 years (our firm was founded in 1997). Our team has decades of combined experience. We understand the local business environment and Australian tax laws inside out. You’re in seasoned hands.

We believe in building long-lasting relationships. You’ll get a dedicated client manager who truly understands your business. We take the time to get to know you and tailor solutions – because no two businesses are the same. Whether you’re a solo tradie or manage a growing team, our advice is aligned to your goals.

Proactive Approach

We don’t just churn out tax returns or reports. We actively look for opportunities to save you money and help you grow. Clients often tell us that previous accountants “just did the basics,” whereas we offer suggestions (e.g., “Hey, have you considered this deduction?” or “We notice your business could benefit from quarterly tax planning meetings to avoid surprises.”). Being proactive is part of our DNA - we want to add value, not just keep score.

Forget only seeing your accountant at tax time. We partner with you year-round, providing proactive tax planning, regular check-ins, and strategies to improve performance. Our clients often tell us they “sleep better at night” knowing we’ve got their compliance and planning covered – before issues arise. We’re not just number-crunchers; we’re business advisors who help you forecast, plan, and grow.

Personalised Attention

As a boutique firm, we pride ourselves on personalised service. When you become our client, you’re not a number - you’ll likely deal with the same core team members over time who truly get to know you or your business. Our directors (Rebecka and Adam) and our senior staff are very hands-on and accessible. We aim to build long-term relationships where you feel comfortable calling us for advice whenever needed.

Tired of paperwork? So are we. Link Accounting will set up seamless cloud-based accounting systems (like Xero or MYOB) to streamline your bookkeeping and reporting. Enjoy real-time financial data and automated processes that save you time and reduce errors. We’ll train and support you in using these tools, so you have clarity and control over your numbers anywhere, anytime.

Up-to-date & Tech-Savvy

We leverage the latest technology like cloud accounting software (we’re Xero Gold Partners and also work with MYOB, QuickBooks, etc.) to streamline processes. This means more efficient service and real-time collaboration with our clients. Also, we stay current with tax law changes and industry trends - our advice is based on the latest information and best practices. Ultimately, our goal is to make your life easier when it comes to finances. We want to be the trusted partner you can rely on for important financial decisions. The positive feedback and referrals we receive from existing clients are a testament to the quality and dedication we bring.
